「秋の夜空に、願いをかけて」

　　小さい頃に、夜空を見上げたことはあるだろうか。あの輝く星が、何万光年も先にあると知ったときの驚きはいかばかりのものだったろう。光でさえ何万年もかかる距離って、人間の想像力を超える。何気なく見上げている空が、現在と過去の両方の姿を見せていることを知ったとき、人間のちっぽけさを嫌でも思い知らされたのではないだろうか。

　　Did you look up at stars at midnight when you were a little child? You must be surprised to know that those stars are billions-light year away, which is beyond our imagination. This means we see the present and the past at the same time.

　ガリレオの地動説や、光学機器の発達や、多くの科学者の研究の結果のおかげで私たちは夜空を古代の人たちとは違ったものとして眺めている。これから科学が進歩すると、また今とは違った思いで夜空を眺めるのかもしれない。

　　Galileo’s heliocentricism, the development of optical instruments and studies of many scientists help us to seen stars in the different way from the ancient people’s. Maybe we will see them in the different way from the present’s one as science advances.

　受験勉強の場では、手ごわいライバルも将来そうした知見を人類にもたらすかもしれない貴重な人材だと思えば敬意を表してもいい気になる。人の命を救う医学も、この宇宙のありかたを研究する天文学も、科学の基礎には数学がある。

　　その事実を知っていれば、

「sinθ cosθ　を勉強して、何の役に立つの？！」

　　というセリフが出るはずがない。

　When we take any exam, we are under a keen competition. Sometimes we hate our rivals. But we can respect them if we can believe they can contribute to our society. Good students might be doctors to save people. Some might be scientists who try to understand the universe.

　そういう賢い子を優遇してやれば、医療技術が進み多くの人の命が助かる。社会が良くなる可能性が高い。利用してやればいいのに、何でおだてて利用するくらいのことが出来ないのだろう。

Why don’t we respect such good students? If they feel that they can enjoy in this society, they are happy to work hard for this society. We had better make use of their abilities.

　　　小学校に入る前くらいなら

「できすぎ君、スゴイねぇ」

　　と単純に褒めていたのに、中学生や高校生になると

「できすぎ、変じゃね！」

　　と、からかいやイジメが始まる。つまり、妬みや嫉みだ。嘆かわしい。情けない。日本人は、そこがダメだ。田舎は、更にダメだ。

But from around junior high school students, many of us start to be jealous of smart students. And smart students sometimes get attack from bad students. I don’t like it.
