「名古屋大学ラブ・ストーリー（４）　お祭りと同窓会」

 

　健二は貴子を自分の町のお祭りに誘ってみた。健二の両親は驚いた。健二は彼女を家に連れて行ったことなどなかったからだ。それで、健二の両親は貴子のことを根掘り葉掘り健二から聞きだそうとした。

 

　　Kenji invited Takako to his parents’ house in Shizuoka.  They were going to have a festival.  Kenji’s parents were surprised because he had never invited his girlfriend to his parents’ house.  Then Kenji’s mother asked a lot to know who she was.

　

　健二は、両親の心配性を笑っていたのだが実はそういう話ではなかった。両親が心配していたのは息子の嫁になるかもしれない女性の出自だった。どこから調べてきたのか分からないが、ある日、健二は母親から告げられた。

「その子はやめとき。どうも部落出身らしい」

　　最初は、健二は何のことが分からなかった。

「そういえば、歴史で部落問題とか習ったことがある」

　　という記憶があった。それで、健二はいろいろ本を読み漁り調べてみた。

 

  It was a laughing matter for Kenji.  He thought his parents worried too much.  However he was misunderstanding.  What his mother was checking was her birth place or her relatives. 

  One day, his mother told Kenji that Takako might be from Buraku people.

“Buraku?  I read about it in history book.”

  He started to read some books written about Buraku.

 

　すると、信じられないことに現代日本でも部落差別や在日朝鮮人の差別が厳然として残っていることを知った。

「バカバカしい」

　　と思ったが、親孝行の健二は無視もできないと考えた。

 

“This is ridiculous!”

  That’s what Kenji felt when he read some books written about Buraku people.

　However he was a good son and didn’t want to ignore what his mother said.

 

　　二人の気持ちさえしっかりしていれば、問題はないと考えていた。ちょうど、その時に四日市高校の同窓会のハガキが舞い込んだので、健二は同級生にこの問題を相談しようと思った。

　　同窓会の当日は、したたかに酔ったので近くの同級生の家に泊めてもらって翌日帰宅した。すると、母親が泣いていた。

「彼女との交際を反対したから列車にでも飛び込んだのじゃないかと・・・」

　と言った。

 

  Kenji believed the relationship with Takako was firm enough to overcome this problem.  At that time, Kenji got a postcard which said they would have a school reunion.  Kenji thought he might be able to talk about his problem with his old friends.

  On the day, they drank and Kenji stayed at his his old friend’s house.  The next day when he came home, his mother was crying saying

“Since we opposed to your idea to have a girlfriend who might be Buraku, we thought you had committed suicide.”

 

　　健二は、自分がこんなに心配をかけていると驚くとともに、両親を心配させたことを後悔した。

 

  Kenji was surprised and regretted what he did.
