「ママ、お腹が痛いよぉ！」

と、突然たいせつな娘さんが泣き出したら、あなたはどうするだろうか。慌てて近所の病院に連れていくだろう。そして、医者が

「これは難病で、現在京都にある京大病院の伊藤先生でないと手術ができない」

　と言われたら、どうするだろう。もちろん、すぐに紹介状をもらって京都に向かうと思う。そして、完治したら伊藤先生に感謝するだろう。神様のように見えるかもしれない。

“Mommy, I have a stomachache!”

　　When your lovely daughter cries, what would youdo?  Probably you take you daughter tothe nearest hospital.  If he says

“This is a serious case.  Only Dr. Ito can perform this delicatesurgery.”

  You must take her tohim.  If she gets better, you mustappreciate him.

でも、その伊藤先生が中学時代や高校時代にどういう生活を送っていたかは考えないだろう。

But you don’t think what Dr.Ito was doing during his school days.

　　私は過去に、京大医学部に合格した高校生を２名指導させてもらったことがある。阪大医学部、名大医学部に合格した生徒を指導させてもらったこともある。四日市高校の国際科だった子や、暁６年制の特待生だった子だ。

  I had many opportunities toteach very good students.  Some of thempassed the entrance exam to the medical department of University of Kyoto, Osakaand Nagoya.  They were from Yokkaiti highschool or Akatsuki high school.

　　友人から「変わった子」と言われていた。バランスなどとれていなかった。それは、勉強優先が行きすぎていると思われたのかもしれない。クラブを自主退部して顰蹙をかった子もいた。授業を無視して問題集ばかりやって注意を受ける子もいた。

  Their friends called them strange students.  Their life style was different from otherstudents, who just followed their teachers’ orders.  Some quit their club activitiesspontaneously.  Some were solving mathproblems in history class.

　　他人の評価など気にしないマイペースの子が多かった。効率良く勉強しようとしたら、自然にそうなってしまうのであって、意図的に周囲と摩擦を起こしているのではない。

  For them, what others think about them was notimportant.  Efficiency wasimportant.  They didn’t intend to causefriction.  At the same time, they werenot afraid of friction.

　　そんな伊藤先生に我が子を救われても、家に帰ると、救ってもらった娘さんに

「宿題をきちんとやるのよ」

　　と、学校の教師の指示どおりにやるように強要する。先生に逆らったり、目立ったことをしないように求める。

「なぜなんだろう？」

“Why?”

　アメリカでは、こうではなかった。伊藤先生のように、自主的にやる子が高く評価された。目立つ子が称賛された。アメリカは加点法で評価するけれど、日本は減点法で評価する。

　　When I was teaching in Utah, teachers addedpoints.  On the other hand, Japaneseteachers deduct points.

　　そこに、全員同じ“鋳型”にはめ込もうとする左翼教師が加わると最悪になる。アメリカでは“失敗”が奨励される。何にでもチャレンジして失敗すれば、ヒーローになれる。日本では、失敗は忌み嫌われる。

　　If they have left-wing teachers there, thesituation is the worst because red teachers like to cast students into amold. 

　　この世に存在しないという、円周率のπ。しかし、計算式には絶対に必要で便利な数字。虚数もそうだ。この世に存在しない記号。なのに、複素数平面では、回転させるのに絶対に必要で便利な記号。

  Ｗｈａｔ is Π？　We cannot writeit using numbers.  But without it, it isimpossible to calculate many volumes. 

　　受験指導をしていて気づくのだが、勉強のできる子たちは私とこういう話をするのが大好きだ。彼らもまた、この不可解な世界に魅了されている。数学や物理や生物を習うと感受性の鋭い子は、必ずこの驚異の世界の扉を開ける。

　　Teaching students, I noticed that my students liked thistype of talk.  They are interesting thismysterious world.  Sensitive studentsbelieve math, physics and biology will open the door to this wonderful world.

　　ほんの少しでも数学をかじると、そんな光景が広がる。数式は謎を解明する道具として有効だと分かる。この魅力にとりつかれたら、徹底的に極めたくなるのが普通だ。その強烈な動機づけは、受験勉強の枠を超える。

  Math is wonderful enough for us to knowthe mystery.  Numbers are good tools tounderstand this world.  Once we know thistool is effective, we cannot stop studying it. It is not just for the preparation for the entrance exam.

　「どの問題集がいいですか？」「どの塾がいいですか？」「朝方と夜型とどちらがいいですか？」「何を食べたらいいですか？」

　などといった問題は、瑣末な問題でしかない。そんなことは、

「この世の謎を究明しい！」

　　という思いがあったら、自ずと分かるもの。本気なら

「こんな問題やりたくない」

　とか

「今日はクラブがあるから」

　なんて言葉が出るはずがない。

  “Which problem books are good?” “Which cramming school is good?”

  Such questions areridiculous.  Trifle matters should beignored.  If you have much enthusiasm,you must be able to know it naturally.

  You cannot say
