　　毎年、年末頃に

「今年の中３は賢くて、四日市高校を１０人も受けるそうだ」

　　という話が出て、暁６などの受験の後に現実を知ると志望校を桑高どころか川越に変える子が続出する。

Every year, at the end of the year, my students say

　　ここ数年ずっとそんなことが繰り返されていることは、書いたとおりだ。私はその現実を知っているので、

「緊急事態だから、－－をした方が良い」

　　とアドバイスをしても、聞く耳を持ってもらえないのも書いたとおりだ。それどころか、反発されるので最近は聞いてくれる子だけにしか話さない。

Every year histrory repeats itself. So I give the advice saying

　But very few listen to what I say. So recently I've given my advice tonly o smart students.

　北勢中学校や東員第二中学校のように、クラブ活動を勉強に優先するような指導をしたら勉強時間が決定的に足らなくなる。

If you give top priority to club activities, you will lose time to study.

　　また、教科書どおりの出題をする定期テストでは９０点以上をとる子は

「この勉強時間、勉強法でいいのだ」

　　と間違った自信をつけてしまう。

Regular tests give only easy problems and some students misunderstand they are very smart with 90 points.

　　そして、ダメ押しが助け合いの班学習。成績上位の子は

「Ａくんって、賢いね」

　　と言われて、さらに勘違いを深める。

　　そういう子に、

「そうではない。この地区以外の子はもっとできる。もっと勉強している」

　　と言っても、ちっちゃいプライドが傷ついて反発されてしまう。

Group study is the worst. Smart students are required to teach bad students and they again misunderstand they are very smart. I say

“No, you must know how hard students in the next town study.”

They don't like such advice.

　　高校は、そんな「井の中の蛙」を欲しがらない。それでは、自分の高校の合格実績に貢献してくれない。受験は、どの問題集を使うか、どの時間帯に勉強するかといったテクニックより、ヤル気、自発性が大切なのだ。

Senior high schools don't want such “The frog in the well”. Such students cannot pass the entrance exams to good universities and the senior high cannot rise in fame. The most important thing is his or her own will to pass.

「何がなんでも、国公立の医学部」

　となったら、四日市高校の上位５％くらいに入らなければならないのだから

「四日市高校に滑り込みでも、合格できたらいい」

　なんて思わない。たとえ、中学で１番でも油断をするはずがない。目標に達しないのなら、勉強以外の全てを切り捨ててでも頑張る。

「宿題をやっておけば」

　のような子には、絶対に国立大の上位校の合格はムリなのだ。

“I have to pass the entrance exam to the medical department of good national universities. No other choicee because of financial problem.”

I like to teach such students because they are very very enthusiastic to study. They try everything to pass.

“Only homework.”

Such students cannot pass the exam to good universities.

　　親に経済的な負担をかけたくない子は、

「勝手にクラブを引退して、ヒドイ」

　　とか

「俺たちは無視か」　

　　とか、周囲から非難を受けても関係ない。怠けた子、油断している子たちより、自分の親の方が大切だもの。

Students who know their parents' financial problem and don't want to bother them study very hard. They ignore their classmates' words like

“What a selfish person you are!”

“You ignore us.”

Parents are more important than classmattes.

脇目も振らずに、ひたすら勉強だけに邁進したら、たいていの子は

「アイツは変」

　と言うだろうが、関係ない。それだけやっても成功するか分からないのが、受験だ。

When you study without joining club activities or getting along with other classmates, you must be called strange. That's no problem.

　　と言う子が多い。定員割れしているような高校を志望して、地区大会にも勝てないような状態では両方とも壊滅しているとしか言えないのに。

　　その先に、どんな人生が待っているのか分かっていない。

「勉強だけ出来ても、人間としてダメな奴が多い」

　　と反論されるが、勉強ができるということは少なくとも日常生活はきちんとしている。そうでないと成績は上がらない。

　　私の経験では、成績と人間としての品格はかなり相関関係が強い。

「金だけが人生じゃない」

「勉強だけじゃダメだぞ。テニスは強制だ」

　　などと言ったら、生徒はどう思うだろうか。

If you say that money is not everything, how do students in financial problem feel? They know money is not everything but they have to survive.

“The club activity is required.”

We don't have such a law.

そんな想像力もなく、一律に宿題を出し、クラブや生徒会を強制する学校ってなんだろう。

　　私は、そんな教師に逆らい、友達をなくしてでも、勉強に頑張り出世して親を助けたいと思う生徒を支持する。

　　そういう子が、良い子だと信じている。

Teahcers who cannot understand their problem must have been brought up in rich family. For me, students who study hard not to bother their parents finacially are good students and we don't have to criticize them.
