徒然なるままに (12) 化学が好きになった理由 ／ Writings with idle ramblings (12) How How I fell in love with chemistry

化学を専攻され、導電性プラスチックで2000年度のノーベル化学賞を受賞された白川筑波大学教授が2000.11.02 に朝日新聞寄せられた手記を拝見して、化学を少し勉強したという共通項だけで私も同じように過去を振り返ってみたい。

いつごろから理科に、特に化学に興味を持ち、好きになったのかはよくわからないし、そのきっかけがあっとも思えない。小学校や中学校では化学が独立して教えられていた訳ではないので、化学を意識したのは高校の科目として一週間５時間の授業があり、その一学期の成績がひどいものだった時だろう。

一学期の化学の成績が10点評価で赤点すれすれの2か3だったので、自分なりに反省し、努力した結果、二学期は中間試験で１００点満点、期末試験も９０点台で通知票は10点評価に跳ね上がった時だった。

今から思えば、化学という学問も他の教科と同じように我慢して基本的知識として覚え込むことが必要です。それがしっかりと頭に入ってはじめて、反応や理論を理解できる科目です。一学期の不振、不勉強への反発力が私の化学の勉強に対する基本的な姿勢を作り、教えてくれました。そして、その後の会社での化学研究員生活につながりました。https://www.office-ktk.jp/%E6%8A%80%E8%A1%93%E9%96%8B%E7%99%BA-2-%E5%8C%96%E5%AD%A6%E9%96%A2%E4%BF%82/

学生の間で理科への興味が失われていると聞くにつけ、自然を見て育った幸せ、勉強方法に早く気付いた幸運さを感じずにはいられません。

　I read the article written by Professor Shirakawa of Tsukuba University, who majored in chemistry and won the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for conductive plastics, in the Asahi Shimbun newspaper on November 2, 2000, and would like to look back on my past in the same way, only with the common factor of having studied chemistry a little.

　I am not sure when I first became interested in or fond of science, especially chemistry, and I do not think I had the opportunity to do so. Chemistry was not taught independently in elementary and junior high schools, and I became aware of chemistry when I had five classes a week as a subject in high school and my grade of chemistry for the first semester was abysmal.

　My chemistry grade in the first semester was a 2 or 3, just short of a red mark on a 10-point scale, and as a result of my own reflection and effort, the second semester was when I scored a perfect 100 on the midterm exam and a 90 on the final exam, and my report card jumped up to a 10-point scale.

　In hindsight, the study of chemistry, like any other subject, requires patience and memorization as basic knowledge. It is a subject in which reactions and theories can only be understood when it is firmly in your mind. The resilience of my first semester's poor performance and lack of study created and taught me a basic attitude toward my chemistry studies. 　As I hear about the loss of interest in science among students, I can't help but feel happy that I grew up with nature and lucky that I realized early on how to study it.
