タカコとケンジの物語

　　貴子は泣いていた。

 

“A new car must be much better than a used car!!”

 Takako was crying.

　　貴子は四日市に帰り、健二は桑名に帰って工場勤務が始まった。幸い上司に気に入られて海外勤務が決まりそうだった。健二は、もう二度とあのような修羅場は御免だった。２年が過ぎ、上司の娘さんと交際が始まっていた。

 

 Keiko got back home in Yokkaichi and Kenji came home in Kuwana andstarted to work in a factory.  His bossliked Kenji and he might have to work in a foreign country.  Kenji didn’t like to be involved in a veritablehell.

 2 years passed.  Kenji and hisboss’ daughter was having a date..

 

　　そんなある日、何気なくテレビを見ていたら四日市で火事があったというニュースが飛び込んできた。興味がなかった。ところが、後で新聞を読んで驚いた。死亡した女性は貴子だった。

 

  Oneday TV news said that there was a fire in Yokkaichi and they had one female victim.  Kenji was not interested in itbut to his surprise, it was Takako that was dead.  He knew it reading a newspaper. 

 

　貴子はあれから結婚し、離婚し、１人暮らしをしている時に焼死したらしい。出火場所が貴子の部屋だったそうだから、何かあったのだろう。

 

 It seemed that Takako got married and divorced and lived alone in anapartment house.  Her room was the place where the fire started.  Something wrong must be there.

 

　　貴子の肌はやわらかだった。生きたまま炎に焼かれる苦しみはいかばかりだっただろう。あの白い、やわらかだった腕の感触が今もよみがえることがある。

 

  Takako’s arm was soft and her skin wassmooth.  How painful it was to be burntwhile still alive.  Kenji still rememberher smile.

 

健二は、大学時代に一緒にプラスチックの桶を持って貴子と銭湯に行った日のことを想った。貴子はドライ・カレーを作るのが得意で、とても美味しかった。

 

  Kenji recalled that they went to a public bath having plastic pail.  She was good at cooking and dried curry and rice was her favorite.

 

　　もはや、あの日はもどらない。考えてみれば、新しい男ができたからすぐ乗り換える女子より簡単に別れられない女子の方が信用できるのかもしれない。あの日、貴子は元カレと別れようとしていたのかもしれない。

 

 Good old days passed rapidly and left a bitter memory.  A girl who easily gives a cold shoulder to the former boyfriend is a little cold.  Atthat time Takako might try to say good-by to her old boyfriend.

 

　　今となっては、下らぬ繰言だ。

　　Everything is too late.

 

　　でも、四日市高校に合格して南山大学に入学した貴子は、あんな死に方をする女子ではなかったはずだ。健二は、今も「冷たい雨」を聞くと、

「あの日に違った言い方が出来たら・・・」

と、胸がつまる思いがする。

A girl who could pass the entrance exam toYokkaichi High School must have studied very hard.  A girl who passed the entrance exam to Nanzan University must have studied hard. 

Kenji knew how hard Takako studied because she was in the next class.

　　今となっては意味がないのだが、健二は「部落」という言葉が気になっていた。姉が二人いたが、健二だけ大学に行かせてもらった。親の期待を裏切りたくなかったし、老後の世話もするつもりだった。

 

　　It is useless to regretit, however Kenji is thinking about Buraku.  He has two elder sisters and he is the only one who went to university.  He wants tomeet his parents’ expectation.  He wantsto take care of his parents.

 

　ただ、貴子との結婚の反対の理由が「部落」と言われても当時は何も分からず調べもしなかった。しかし、全てが終わってしまった今になって気になりだした。ネットで調べた健二は次の説明を見つけた。

 

　　When Kenji’s motheropposed to his marriage because of Buraku, Kenji was not interested in it atthat time.  However he wants to know about it and tries to check it.

結婚差別

部落出身者と結婚すると血縁関係が生ずるため、「自分の家系（息子、娘）の血が穢（けが）れるから」と反対する家族（親戚なども）が多くいた。内密に身元調査や聞き合わせを行い、部落出身者と分かると結婚を許さない例や、好きな人と一緒になることに妨げがあった。そのため部落民は部落民同士で結婚することや、仮に部落外の人と結婚できたとしても、それは親族の祝福がない駆け落ちであるなどのことが多かった。また、結婚差別に遭い、自ら命を絶つ者も多くいた。今でも、結婚に反対する傾向は少なからずあり、露骨に反対する場合・それ以外の理由に託けて反対する場合の両方がある。この問題があるため、現在はどの探偵業者も、“差別につながる身元調査はしません”と広告（主として電話帳）に注記している。

Although legallyliberated in 1871, with the abolition of the feudal caste system, this did not put an end to social discrimination against them nor their lower livingstandards because Japanese family registration was fixed to ancestral home address until recently, which allowed peopleto deduce their Burakumin membership.
