Going back to Setsuden-mushi story, it was developed to cut standby electricity consumption of fax machines by 100%. We have received various requests and opinions from customers while their using the first model "Setsuden-mushiKS-96A". As a result, we now have three models: two for communication equipment including fax machines and one for copy machines. The features of these models are described as follows.

The most important feature of Setsuden-mushi, as we have repeatedly mentioned, is that Setsuden-mushi itself has no standby electricity consumption, i.e., zero.

Before I developed Setsuden-mushi, there were devices that captured telephone signals and switched equipment on, but all of them consumed some electricity during standby until they received the telephone signal. In this respect, the Setsuden-mushi differs fundamentally and significantly from other similar devices.

Setsuden-mushi does not consume any energy for itself during standby, and has zero standby electricity consumption, which is why I say that it "works without food.

Now, let me explain how this "working without eating food" became possible.

Operating principle of Setsuden-mushi switching on connected devices

 1. The diode bridge 1 (DB1) rectifies the AC call signal (16Hz) from the station and extracts it as direct current.

2. Photocoupler 2 (PC2) applies current to the Setsuden-mushi circuit and    holds it.   PC1 turns on the power supply circuit.

The reason why there is no standby electricity consumption by Setsuden-mushi itself.

If no DC current is obtained by DB1, the relay does not work and the SOD circuit is not closed, so no current flows. In other words, there is no standby electricity consumption.

Confirmation experiment of zero standby electricity consumption by Setsuden-mushi

Mr. Yasuo Murai, who was investigating standby electricity consumption of a wide range of home appliances in Yoshikawa City, Saitama Prefecture, measured the standby electricity consumption of Setsuden-mushi in 1998 and he reported that "no standby electricity consumption is detected" as a result of his experiment.

Some of you may be concerned about whether I can disclose such a thing. However, excessive monopolization and cover-up of intellectual property rights and patents are often detrimental to society as a whole and to the smooth development of technology.

Based on this belief of mine, I relinquished the intellectual property rights of Setsuden-mushi in 2000. Thus, legally, anyone can manufacture and sell Setsuden-mushi. However, it is questionable whether a manufacturing and sales business that completely disregards the developer ethically can grow in a healthy way. This concept is discussed later.
