徒然なるままに (15) 昇進、海外出張とTOEIC ／ Writings with idle ramblings (15) TOEIC for Promotions and Overseas Business Travel

2000年01月22日の新聞によれば、ＩＢＭではＴＯＥＩＣ点数と昇進や海外出張の関係を以下のように規定したとか。これが英語の社内公用語化の第一波だったようです。

　６００点　　　課長相当職　　短期出張　企業の戦力となる水準　

　７３０点　　　次長相当職　　長期出張　あらゆる状況に対応可能素地水準　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

　参考）大卒平均　４４０点

そして2023年05月22日の新聞によれば現在は英語の社内公用語化の第二波が来ているとのことです。

　まあ、日本人だから英語は関係ない、というのも考え方の一つですから、その考えも結構でしょう。

　ご存じの方も多いでしょうが、ＴＯＥＩＣとは Test of English for International Communication の略だったと思います。

　すなわち、英語での意思伝達能力を判定している検定試験ですが、今日では多くの企業が社員の実務と日常の英語能力を判定するのに利用しています。いわゆる実用英検は学生の英語能力判定試験といったニュアンスがあります。

　現在、国際語というか世界語としての地位を確立しているのは我が日本語ではなく英語です。残念ながら。

　英語が広まった経緯はともかく、理由の一つは言語としては簡単であり、多くの民族に受け入れられた、からだと私は思います。

　では、どうすればＴＯＥＩＣ６００点レベル、あるいはそれ以上のレベルに到達できるのか？　一口で言えば、自身を英語漬けにする、ことだと私は思います。

　具体的な英語漬け方法は

１．朝の目覚めは英語ニュース、番組で

２．就寝も英語番組を聞きながら、あるいは見ながら

３．日中、仕事中は可能な限り

　　見る；英語新聞、英語雑誌　インターネットで

　　聞く：ＢＢＣ、ＶＯＡ、海外ＦＭなどをインターネットラジオで

　　書く：メールはすべて英語で

　　話す：？？？？

話す　ための訓練は

１．仕事や　身近なこと　興味あること　を英語で口にする

２．毎日、最低でも一日おきに

３．ネイティブは必ずしも必要ではない

４．正確さは後回し、でも必要

５．継続のためにはお金も払う、そして気楽に、楽しくやることです。

Promotions, Overseas Business Travel, and TOEIC

According to the newspaper of January 22, 2000, IBM stipulated the following relationship between TOEIC scores and promotions and overseas business trips. This seems to have been the first wave of making English the official language in the company.

　600 TOEIC points; Equivalent to a section chief, short-term business trip,

　　　　　　　　　　Level of ability to be an asset to the company

　730 TOEIC points; Deputy manager level, long-term business trip level,　

　　　　　　　　　　Level that can be applied to any situation

　(Reference) Average for college graduates: 440 points

And according to the newspaper of May 22, 2023, the second wave of English as an official language in the company is currently underway.

　One way of thinking is that English is irrelevant because we are Japanese, so that idea is fine.

　As many of you probably know, TOEIC stands for Test of English for International Communication.

　Today, many companies use TOEIC to assess the practical and everyday English skills of their employees. The so-called Practical English Proficiency Test has the nuance of an English proficiency test for students.

　Today, it is English, not Japanese, that has established itself as an international language, or rather as a world language. Unfortunately, it is English, not Japanese.

　Regardless of how English spread, I think one of the reasons is that it is easy as a language and has been accepted by many peoples.

　So, how can one reach a TOEIC score of 600 or even higher?　In a nutshell, I think it is by immersing yourself in English.

　Specific ways to immerse yourself in English are,

1. Wake up in the morning with English news and programs.

2. Go to bed while listening to or watching English programs.

3. During the day at work do the followings as much as possible.

　　Reading: English newspapers and magazines on the Internet

　　Listening: BBC, VOA, overseas FM, etc. on Internet

　　Writing: All emails in English

　　Speaking: ？？？？

Speaking practice includes the followings.

1. Speak English about your work, your immediate surroundings, and things that interest you.

2. Speak English every day, at least every other day.

3. You don't necessarily need native speakers to talk with.

4. Accuracy is an afterthought, but necessary.

5. Pay for continuity, and take it easy and have fun.
