第百二十九章

「一心不乱だけど、他人の自分」

　　この世は「勝てば官軍」であって、強いもの、優れたものが勝つのではない。勝ったら優れたものと認めてもらえるのだ。歌手だって、歌のうまい人がヒットを飛ばすわけではない。ヒットをしたら評価されるわけだ。

　　Many people say “If youwin, you are in the right, but if you lost, you are in the wrong.”　　Good singers arenot always popular and popular singers are good.

　　だけど、そうやって道を踏み外していく人がどれだけいることか。

  This might be true but how many people getlost because of this way of living.

　　私は４０年間、英語の勉強、数学の勉強、受験指導を行ってきた。受験指導なら、たいていの講師に負ける気がしない。で、その証を立てようと考えた。つまり、合格実績を出そうとした。

  I have taught students for 40 years and feelthat we don’t have so many good teachers as I am.  I try to prove it showing the number ofstudents who passed the entrance exam to good schools studying in my school.

　　私は自己満足ではなく、客観的な証拠が欲しいと思って実績を出そうと思っているのだが、これも道を踏み外していくリスクがある。たとえば、

「私は英語が使える」

　と言っても社会では信用してもらえない。だから、英検１級。数学も同じだった。

 Objective evidence has been important for me , not self-satisfaction.  My students and their parents need it becausemy students are all over in this country, Japan.  Even if I say I can use English, who trustsmy words?

「数学Ⅲを指導できる」

　と言ってもダメで、旧帝レベルの理系受験生を指導してみないとダメだった。数学ⅡＢまでも、京大二次で７割をとって見せる必要があった。あくまで、生徒指導のため。

  Nobody trusts me when I say it is possiblefor me to teach examinees to the University of Kyoto if I don’t show them theresult of the exam I took.

　　ところが、夢中になると目的を忘れて資格や正解率ばかりに目が向いてしまう傾向がある。生徒の役に立ってこそ意味があるのに、自分の合格や学力ばかりが気になるようになりがちだ。

　　いつも、

「自分は何のためにこれをやっているのか」

　と、心に留めておかないと道を踏み外す。

  But we have to be careful when we areabsorbed in something important because we tend to forget the original purpose. We always have to keep it in our mind.

第百三十章

「英語の勉強は、暗記ではない」

　　機械翻訳が行き詰っている。Yahoo などで翻訳にかけると奇妙な翻訳ができあがることをご存知の方も多いだろう。使いものにならない。受験の模範解答を知ろうとしてもダメなのだ。人間の講師でないと無理。

　　We cannot trust the translation by computers.  You know that using Yahoo translation.  You cannot get model answers from it.  We need human teachers.

　　なぜなのか。 Why?

　　私は毎日、通信生の方の英作文を添削させてもらっている。問題の日本文は同じなのに、１０人の解答は１０通り。同じものは１つもない。同じに本文でも、それを「どう受け取るか」。それを英語で「どう表現するのか」は違ってくる。

  I am checking many answer sheets fromcorrespondent course every day.  Althoughthe problems in Japanese is the same one, the answers are all different.  The way one student feels reading the problemis different from the other student.  Theway to express it is also different.

　　だから、添削が必要となる。

 That is why they need checking from a checker.

　　良い翻訳をするには、発言者の性格や発言した状況を瞬時に判断する必要がある。二ヶ国語ができるということは、そういう感受性や分析力が優れているということだ。

  We have to understand the personality of theperson and the situation he or she is in quickly in order to make a goodtranslation.  Bilinguals are people whoare sensitive and good at analyzing.

　　だから、受験勉強の結果、つまり「学歴」が人物の判定に使われるのは合理的なのだ。英語ができることは、その人物が計画的に行動し、記憶力があり、人の性格や状況分析が優れていることが推測されるからだ。

  That is why many people use school backgroundfor entrance examinations and employment examinations.  If the person can use two languages, itsometimes means he or she is good at planning and has a good memory.  He or she might be able to understand othersand situations.

　　数学も同じことで、単なる計算の問題ではない。様々なありうる解き方の中で、できるだけ短時間で解ける美しい解法を瞬時に選択する。そして、論理的な記述をする。数学ができるというのは、瞬時の判断力がある場合が多いということだ。

   Math is not just calculation.  We have to choose the best solution of allthe solutions.  In that case, we needlogical thinking.  So to be able to solvemath problems usually mean the person is logical.

　　日本に生まれ育って、自然に英語が身につくわけない。生まれた時から微分や積分ができる子もいない。絶対に、誰もが勉強しているのだ。

「あの子は生まれつき賢い」

　　という遺伝はありえるが、それでも勉強しないと身につかないのが学力。

  If you are born and brought up in Japan, itis not possible that you can naturally use English.  You must study hard.  Every single person must study if he or shewants to master differential calculus and integral calculous.  We cannot deny the laws of heredity.  Still hard work is required.
