　　最初に健二が彼女に出合ったのは、四日市高校の３年生のときのことだった。名古屋の本山から歩いて行った河合塾の模試を受けた会場だった。健二は数学の試験中に時計を忘れたことに気づいて焦っていた。

 

　　Kenji and Takako made each other’sacquaintance in summer at the age of 18. It was in a school where they were taking a mock examination inNagoya.  Kenji didn’t have a watch and hewas in a panic in math test.

 

そのとき、隣に座っていた女子の前に置いてあった腕時計がそっと健二の方に向けられた。たぶん、健二がパニックになっていることに気づいたのだろう。助かったのだけれど、健二の知らない子だった。

 

    Then a girl sitting next to Kenji showedher watch to him.  She must have noticedhe was in a panic without a watch.　　Kenji didn’t know her, however he was grateful to heranyway.

 

ただ、制服から同じ高校の生徒ということだけは分かった。それで、それとなく気にしていたら隣のクラスの女子だと分かった。お礼をしようと思っていたが、言い出せずにいた。

    Kenji knew they went to the same schoolbecause she wore the school uniform.  After several days, he knew she was in thenext class.  Kenji wanted to say thankyou but he was too shy to say that.

 

当時、健二は授業が終わると１人で教室に残って勉強していた。家では気が散るので誰もいない教室は集中して勉強できたのだ。帰りに立ち寄るラーメン屋も楽しみの一つだった。

    At that time, Kenji always stayed in theclassroom to study after school.  Hecouldn’t concentrate his attention on his work at home.  Eating noodles on his way home was hispleasure.

 

ある日、隣の教室に自分と同じように１人残って勉強している子のいることに気づいた。廊下を帰っていく影から女子だと分かった。そういう日をすごしていると、それが名古屋の試験会場で自分を助けてくれた女子だと分かった。

 

      Oneday I noticed a student was studying as I did in the next class after school.  It was her, Takako.  I could know it after several days.

 

名前を調べたら、斉藤貴子だと分かったのだが受験直前で彼女のことを考えている余裕がなかった。

 

     Her name was Takako Saito and I had notknown her name before I asked my friends in the next class.
