　　最初に健二が彼女に出合ったのは、四日市高校の３年生のときのことだった。名古屋の本山から歩いて行った河合塾の模試を受けた会場だった。健二は数学の試験中に時計を忘れたことに気づいて焦っていた。

 

　　Kenji and Takako made each other’s　acquaintance in summer at the age of 18. It was in a school where they were taking a mock examination in　Nagoya.  Kenji didn’t have a watch and hewas in a panic in math test.

 

そのとき、隣に座っていた女子の前に置いてあった腕時計がそっと健二の方に向けられた。たぶん、健二がパニックになっていることに気づいたのだろう。助かったのだけれど、健二の知らない子だった。

 

Then a girl sitting next to Kenji showed　her watch to him.  She must have noticed　he was in a panic without a watch.　　Kenji didn’t know her, however he was grateful to heranyway.

 

ただ、制服から同じ高校の生徒ということだけは分かった。それで、それとなく気にしていたら隣のクラスの女子だと分かった。お礼をしようと思っていたが、言い出せずにいた。

　Kenji knew they went to the same school　because she wore the school uniform.  After several days, he knew she was in thenext class.  Kenji wanted to say thank　you but he was too shy to say that.

 

当時、健二は授業が終わると１人で教室に残って勉強していた。家では気が散るので誰もいない教室は集中して勉強できたのだ。帰りに立ち寄るラーメン屋も楽しみの一つだった。

　At that time, Kenji always stayed in the　classroom to study after school.  He　couldn’t concentrate his attention on his work at home.  Eating noodles on his way home was his　pleasure.

 

ある日、隣の教室に自分と同じように１人残って勉強している子のいることに気づいた。廊下を帰っていく影から女子だと分かった。そういう日をすごしていると、それが名古屋の試験会場で自分を助けてくれた女子だと分かった。

 

 　One　day I noticed a student was studying as I did in the next class after school.  It was her, Takako.  I could know it after several days.

 

名前を調べたら、斉藤貴子だと分かったのだが受験直前で彼女のことを考えている余裕がなかった。

 

　Her name was Takako Saito and I had not　known her name before I asked my friends in the next class.

　次に彼女に会ったのは名古屋大学の南口にある八雲町のバス停だった。大学３年のときのことだった。健二がバスを待っていたら女子学生が向こうから歩いてくるのが見えた。

 

　Kenji was waiting for a bus at the nearest　bus ｓtop.  It was near the south　entrance.  Then a girl was approaching　the bus stop, Yagumo-cho.

 

　　よく見たら斉藤さんだった。彼女は名古屋大学の近くにある、南山大学に通っていたらしい。バス停近くの家で家庭教師のアルバイトをしているらしかった。それが分かったのは、ずっと後のことだが。

 

  Thegirl was Takako Saito.  She went to　Nanzan University.  It seemed that she　was teaching a boy at home.  I knew it　after a while, though.

 

　　バス停では

「確か、四日市高校の同級生ですよね」

「そうです」

「もう、バスは行ってしまいましたか」

　　交わした会話はそれだけだった。

 

 At the bus stop.

“Ｙｏｕ　ｗｅｒｅ　ｉｎ　Ｙｏｋｋａｉｔｉ　ｈｉｇｈ　ｓｃｈｏｏｌ　ｓｔｕｄｅｎｔ，　ｗｅｒｅｎ‘ｔ　ｙｏｕ？”

“Ｙｅｓ”

“The bus left already?”

 

　　健二は、翌週も同じ曜日の同じ時間にバス停に行ってみた。しかし、彼女は来なかった。そういう繰り返しをしているうちに、火曜日が彼女のバイトの日らしいことが分かった。

 

  Kenji went to the bus stop the next week,at the same time on the same day of the week. He did it some times and he knew it was Tuesday.

 

　　それで、同じバスに乗りながら彼女には３年前から交際している彼氏がいること。今年から勉強が忙しくなってアパートで生活を始めたことなどを知った。健二はガッカリしたものの、アパートが自分の下宿に近いことを知った。

 

  Kenji also knew that she had had a　boyfriend for 3 years.  Takako started　living alone in an apartment house because she was busy studying.  Kenji was disappointed, however he could know　her apartment house was near his lodge.
